I don’t care how many fun activities you have planned little children will still say, “I’m Bored!” My children are not any different. If you are a parent you can relate. If your child hasn’t said it yet, it’s coming! Our weekdays are filled with learning and after-school activities. I’ve noticed that weekdays don’t yield boredom as much as weekends. The toy boxes are filled and electronics are available, but that is rarely enough. I have 4 fun and frugal ideas that help my children to beat weekend boredom and I hope these ideas will help you as well.
Get Out Of The House and Explore!
I’ve been forcing my children to go outside when they are bored. It works wonders for all of our mental health. The sting of the sunshine is refreshing. The hungry Alabama mosquitos are a constant reminder to me that I need to invest in a Dynatrap. We take our chances and use anti-itch creams after bath time. Going outside to explore beats weekend boredom amazingly.
Bake Some Sweet or Healthy Treats!
My daughter has forced baking to become my jam. I wasn’t very good at baking, but with some helpful tips from mom and a few from Monique, I’ve been winging these snacks and getting awesome reviews from my family! My little girl comes to life in the kitchen and my son actually feels great saying, “I made that!” Delicious snacks make everyone forget their weekend boredom.
Take a Virtual Trip on Google
If you haven’t tried a virtual field trip via google search or YouTube please do it asap! Okay, maybe we are nerds, but we enjoy the virtual field trips offered online. You can begin your search with sites like PBS Kids, National Geographic Kids, and just search “free virtual field trips into Google. We also enjoy visiting other countries via YouTube. Don’t use this tool as a weekend boredom cure if you aren’t willing to participate. This experience is not just another “screen time” distraction. Watching as a family can inspire you to create travel goals or bucket lists.
Create Some Art!
Crayola has been a helpful resource for our art projects. It’s affordable and can be purchased almost everywhere. I’ve always given my kids plain paper, crayons, stickers, and markers to get started, but sometimes it helps to have a premade canvas to spark the fun in art. My son is 11, so he’s very responsible with the paint and liquid glue. My four-year-old, on the other hand, doesn’t understand the words “a little dab will do you” when it comes to glue. Watercolors are fun but can be super messy. I allow it, but I watch the process like an eagle in a nest. Crayola’s Wonder Mess Free products have been beneficial to our art time. There are a variety of character themes including are my four-year-old’s favorites which are Disney Princesses and Peppa Pig. We always purchase ours from Target because I can use drive up even on rainy weekend boredom days. Thanks, Target!
