14 Must-Have Resources for Early Childhood Education At Home

Early Childhood Education is my specialty and passion. There are so many different ways that you can teach your child at home. I enjoy sharing learning ideas and resources here and on “We Love, Play, Learn” on Facebook and Instagram.

You shouldn’t have to spend a lot of money on learning materials and more importantly, all of your materials should be developmentally appropriate for your child.

In this post, I’m sharing a variety of resources and supplies that will help you teach your child at home. All of these items are under $20 when purchased separately.

Gleeporte Counting Bears with Coordinated Sorting Cups  

These colorful bears are wonderful for creating early math activities. You can teach counting, simple addition and subtraction, sorting, colors, and grouping. The price is also under $10.

Emoji Pencils

Any old pencil will get the writing done efficiently, but these fun pencils will keep your child excited about writing letters and numbers everyday. Be sure to give them the “pencil safety ” talk before they use them. These pencils come in a 24 count pack and are under $9.

Pencil Grips

Learning to write can be so difficult for little fingers. We are trying to teach a new skill that requires fine motor control and that’s one skill that children 2 years old and up are trying to learn. Pencil grips are a temporary resource that can assit young children in properly holding a pencil until they feel confident to hold it by themselves.

Melissa & Doug Jumbo Numbers Chunky Puzzle      

This jumbo numbers puzzle is a great addition to a home classroom. Puzzles are important for fine motor control skills, eye and hand coordination, and problem-solving skills. Visually seeing the numbers in this puzzle will help your child to retain the number in their memory. Each number comes with a picture for easy counting. This puzzle is priced under $20.

Wooden Alphabet Puzzles

This alphabet puzzle is perfect for learning letters, letter sounds, and letter order. Considering that it is a puzzle it’s a great resource for problem-solving skills and it teaches perseverance. This puzzle is priced right under $15.

Play-Doh

Play-doh is great for learning time at any time of the day. You can do so many activities with it. We like to use play-doh to model numbers, alphabets, play food, and even make clothes for Barbie Dolls. This entire 10 pack is under $10.

Shapes Beanbags

We’ve used our shapes bean bags for years. They are super soft and easy to clean. I like to use them in a variety of ways including teaching colors. Here is a quick video of my toddler and I using our shapes bean bags.

Crayola Ultra Clean Washable Crayons

You can’t have school at home without art supplies. Crayola crayons are a staple in our home and these washable colors are safe for skin, furniture and clothes. These crayons are priced under $3.

Crayola Washable Broad Line Markers

These markers are perfect for little fingers that are learning how to properly hold writing utensils such as pencils. They are washable and priced under $4.

Fiskars Kids Blunt Tip Scissors

Scissor profiency takes time and practice with young children. It’s always important to give your child the “scissor safety” talk before allowing them to use scissors at home. Allowing young children to use scissors helps with the development of a variety of physical skills including hand-eye coordination. These scissors are priced under $3.

Wipe Clean Workbooks

These wipe clean workbooks are perfect for little children. They eliminate the need for too many worksheets and paper and are great for the environment. These books are priced under $10.

Art Street Lightweight Construction Paper

Construction paper is great for writing and making crafts. Be sure to recycle any scraps of paper. This large pack of paper is less than $15.

The Singing Walrus on YouTube is a great channel to learn “The Days of The Week”, “Months of The Year” and they have so many other fun learning videos.

Story Time for All Kids on YouTube is a great book channel to see new stories read aloud. This is helpful when you can’t make it to the library, want to read something new, or you need to step away from teaching your little one to prepare a snack or lunch.
