How To Refresh An Old Silk Press Without Heat

I think that it’s absolutely amazing that so many black women are now wearing their hair relaxer free. Natural hair is beautiful and healthier for our overall health and scalp care. It doesn’t matter if you wear it straight, kinky, long, or short just do what makes you happy.

What makes me happy is having a healthy texture of hair. I try to keep my hair healthy by using minimal heat, natural oils, conditioners, and necessary trims or sometimes cuts. I normally press my hair only once a year and that is to give it a good in-depth trim and for a new look.

You have to do what you like and feel comfortable with when it comes to your hair. For me, sometimes that means cutting 3 or 4 inches of my hair off, adding a little color to cover my grey hairs, or wearing two-strand twists as a protective style. With my recent silk press, I trimmed off what appeared to be about 3 inches of split ends. I will always choose healthy hair over length. It gave my hair more movement and will help it to continue to grow healthier. Trying to salvage split ends with conditioner and treatments sometimes only leads to more damage.

Living in a hot and humid climate makes straightened natural hair more prone to frizz and dryness. My latest silk press was sabotaged and to make it last until my next desired shampoo I decided to try the tousled beach waves look. This style not only allowed me to wear my silk press an extra week, but it also helped me to not add in any more heat.

The two oils that I used to style and maintain my beach waves were The Mane Choice Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Hair Growth Oil and Africa’s Best Ultimate Herbal Oil. I used “The Mane Choice” oil to refresh my scalp when it is dry in between shampoos. The “Africa’s Best” oil is light enough to nourish the ends of my hair daily. I like to use oils that are mineral, petrolatum, and petroleum-free. Here is a list of some of my favorite affordable oils.

I hope this post has been helpful to you. Remember to do what works for you and your hair and that true beauty comes from what’s inside of your heart, how you love yourself and others. Carmen
